The official HOELT question types have not been released yet.
However, we can make some educated guesses based on the English skills needed for UK visas and the types of questions used in current UK immigration English tests.
The exact test will probably depend on the English level required for your visa.
The speaking section could include:
For example, you might hear:
“Tell me about the area where you live.”
Or:
“Do you prefer travelling by car or public transport? Why?”
At higher English levels, you may need to give longer answers, explain your opinions, compare different ideas, and provide examples.
The listening section could include:
For example, you might listen to a short conversation about booking an appointment and then answer:
“What time is the appointment?”
Or:
“Why does the speaker need to change the booking?”
The HOELT may also combine speaking and listening. You could hear a question and then need to respond naturally, just like you would in a real conversation.
These question types have not been officially confirmed.
However, practising everyday speaking and listening is still a great way to prepare.
Focus on understanding natural conversations, answering questions clearly, giving reasons, and speaking confidently about familiar topics.
As soon as the official HOELT format is released, I will explain every question type and show you exactly how to prepare.
