HOELT Exam! What questions will be on it?

What Will Be on the HOELT Exam?

The official HOELT question types have not been released yet.

However, we can make some educated guesses based on the English skills needed for UK visas and the types of questions used in current UK immigration English tests.

The exact test will probably depend on the English level required for your visa.

Possible HOELT Speaking Questions

The speaking section could include:

  • Personal questions about your family, home, work, studies, hobbies, or daily life
  • Short conversations where you answer questions about familiar topics
  • Everyday role-plays, such as asking for information, booking an appointment, making plans, or explaining a problem
  • Giving your opinion and explaining your reasons
  • Describing a personal experience, place, person, or event
  • Discussing a topic and answering follow-up questions
  • Planning an activity or making a decision with another person

For example, you might hear:

“Tell me about the area where you live.”

Or:

“Do you prefer travelling by car or public transport? Why?”

At higher English levels, you may need to give longer answers, explain your opinions, compare different ideas, and provide examples.

Possible HOELT Listening Questions

The listening section could include:

  • Listening to a short conversation and answering questions
  • Listening for the main idea
  • Listening for important details, such as times, dates, prices, or locations
  • Listening to instructions and choosing the correct response
  • Hearing a question and answering it through speaking
  • Listening to an everyday situation, such as a conversation at work, in a shop, or at a doctor’s appointment
  • Listening to two people make plans or solve a problem

For example, you might listen to a short conversation about booking an appointment and then answer:

“What time is the appointment?”

Or:

“Why does the speaker need to change the booking?”

The HOELT may also combine speaking and listening. You could hear a question and then need to respond naturally, just like you would in a real conversation.

Remember: These Are Predictions

These question types have not been officially confirmed.

However, practising everyday speaking and listening is still a great way to prepare.

Focus on understanding natural conversations, answering questions clearly, giving reasons, and speaking confidently about familiar topics.

As soon as the official HOELT format is released, I will explain every question type and show you exactly how to prepare.
